cervical smear

In medicine, removal of a small sample of tissue from the cervix (neck of the womb) to screen for changes implying a likelihood of cancer. The procedure is also known as the Pap test after its originator, George Papanicolaou.

There are 50 million smears taken annually in the USA (1998).

The main entry criterion was a normal cervical smear taken in 1988, followed by a technically adequate subsequent smear (of any cytologic grade) taken from October 1990 to December 1991.
