passacaglia

Spanish dance form in three time that evolved into an instrumental form constructed over a ground bass, or cyclically repeating bass line. Dramatic tension is created by the juxtaposition of a developing melody and an unchanging background.

An example is Benjamin Britten's disturbing setting of Tennyson's poem ‘The Kraken’ in Nocturne (1958).
