chador |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
chadorAll-enveloping black garment for women worn by some Muslims and Hindus. The origin of the chador dates to the 6th century BC under Cyrus the Great and the Achaemenian Empire in Persia. Together with the purdah (Persian ‘veil’) and the idea of female seclusion, it persisted under Alexander the Great and the Byzantine Empire, and was adopted by the Arab conquerors of the Byzantines. Its use was revived in Iran in the 1970s by Ayatollah Khomeini in response to the Koranic request for ‘modesty’ in dress. |
