chain letter

Mass-distributed letter that promises the recipients great rewards if they distribute the letter further. Chain letters, originally sent via postal services, began to appear on the Internet in 1994. They are a type of pyramid scheme, and as such are illegal for distribution via the US postal service; users are advised not to participate.
