chamberlain

Officer appointed by a king, nobleman, or corporation to perform domestic and ceremonial duties. In England the office of chamberlain at the royal court dates from very early times; the chamberlain was originally the financial officer of the royal household. He no longer has any governmental responsibilities, but remains chief officer of the royal household.
