chartist

In business, investment analyst who uses charts depicting a stock's past performance to predict future price movements. Chartists rely on the premise that past performance is a strong indication, if not an irrefutable guide, to future performance. Using the fluctuations and patterns of charts showing key historic stock indicators, such as PE ratios and price movements, chartists predict the future movements of those indicators. Some analysts regard chartists as the equivalent of astrologers. However, many analysts use some chartist techniques alongside other investment analysis techniques.
