chasseur

In 18th-century France, a soldier who belonged to a light company of skirmishers attached to a regiment; in the modern French army, a member of a class of light regiments capable of rapid movement.

The Chasseurs d'Afrique, first organized in 1831 and stationed in Algeria, were famous for their speed and endurance, and for their Arab horses. The Chasseurs Alpins are regiments of infantry stationed on the southeast frontier of France; they are trained to cover 60.35 km/37.5 mi of mountain ground in a day in full marching order, and use skis and snowshoes in winter.
