Collection of elements that have very similar chemical and physical properties. In the periodic table of the elements such collections are to be found in the vertical columns (groups). The groups that contain the most markedly similar elements are group I, the alkali metals; group II, the alkaline-earth metals; group VII, the halogens; and group 0, the noble or rare gases.
