chest voice

The lower register of the human voice, the chest being the source of sound production. It contrasts with the higher range available from the head voice. In the 19th century and earlier there was disagreement concerning the precise use of the term, some claiming that only head (high) and chest voices exist, others claiming that a third, middle register is also available. Today there is less concern about these distinctions.
