chiaroscuro

In painting and graphic art, the use of strong contrasts of light and shade for dramatic impact. This is made particularly effective where contrasting materials are represented, for example, transparent glass, shining metal, rich velvets, and glossy wood. Masters of chiaroscuro include Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio. The term is also used to describe a monochromatic painting employing light and dark shades only.
