chickadee

Small bird of the Paridae family, order Passeriformes, in North America. There are seven species, all but one exclusive to North America. They are all active, dark-capped, pale-cheeked birds. The commonest species is the black-capped chickadee, Parus atricapillus, which looks very like the willow tit, P. montanus, of Eurasia. It is considered by some authorities to be a subspecies of the latter.

All day the sun has shone on the surface of some savage swamp, where the single spruce stands hung with usnea lichens, and small hawks circulate above, and the chickadee lisps amid the evergreens, and the partridge and rabbit skulk beneath; but now a more dismal and fitting day dawns, and a different race of creatures awakes to express the meaning of Nature there.
