chief technical officer

Executive responsible for information technology within a company, as well as acting as communication point for investment analysts and the media with regards to technological issues. The role of CTO used to be subordinate to that of chief information officer (CIO) and was responsible for purchasing and implementing information technology. Following the dotcom boom the role of CTO has become less well defined and CTOs may often find themselves responsible for technological affairs on a strategic level with CIOs dealing with the purchasing of information technology.
