During its rapid growth among German immigrants the Iowa Synod was repeatedly challenged on such issues as chiliasm (the millennium), the anti-Christ, and predestination by the Missouri Synod. Finally, while Hashimoto distances himself from Marx's chiliasm, he devotes a final chapter to his own prescriptions for the problems of socio-economic inequality, based largely on the ideas of the economist Amartya Sen. In addition, all of the authors avoid, not surprisingly, any hint of chiliasm tainting their tex t. |
