A late 18th-century fan, possibly of Dutch origin, in Chinoiserie style. This style was at the height of its popularity at the time. The scene is painted in watercolour on paper, and the fan has an ivory handle.

In the decorative arts and architecture, the use of Chinese styles and motifs in Western art, especially in the late 17th- to early 19th-centuries. Chinese lacquerwork and porcelain were imported into Europe in the 17th century and became popular with rococo designers.
