chipmunkAny of several species of small ground squirrel with characteristic stripes along its side. Chipmunks live in North America and East Asia, in a variety of habitats, usually wooded, and take shelter in burrows. They have pouches in their cheeks for carrying food. They climb well but spend most of their time on or near the ground. The Siberian chipmunk Eutamias sibiricus, about 13 cm/5 in long, is found in northern Russia, northern China, and Japan.
