agar

Jellylike carbohydrate, obtained from seaweeds. It is used mainly in microbiological experiments as a culture medium for growing bacteria and other micro-organisms. The agar is resistant to breakdown by micro-organisms, remaining a solid jelly throughout the course of the experiment.

It is also used as a laxative and in preserved foods.

From each culture that showed macroscopic evidence of Neisseria, 3 colonies were subcultured onto chocolate agar plates.
The 1 -mm opalescent colonies usually appear after 24 to 48 hours of incubation at 37[degrees]C in cysteine-enriched broth, thioglycollate broth, cysteine heart-blood agar, buffered charcoal-yeast agar, or chocolate agar.
Efforts to culture the organism from biopsy specimens were again unsuccessful (different solid and liquid media, blood or chocolate agar, guinea pig, Balb/c mice).
