choir organ

Third manual (keyboard) of an organ, characterized by quiet stops and pipes appropriate for accompanying a church choir. Often the pipes of the choir organ are housed separately from the rest, located behind the organist's back instead of being grouped together with the other pipes, usually in front of and above the player.

It was formerly often a small instrument set apart from the principal organ in a church, and used separately to accompany the choir.
