chordophone

One of the four main groups of musical instrument used in the original Sachs-Hornbostel system, the others being idiophone, aerophone, and membranophone. A chordophone describes any musical instrument whose sound is produced by vibrating stretched strings by plucking, bowing, or striking. This group includes harps, violins, pianos, guitars, and lutes.
