Outermost of the three membranes enclosing the embryo of reptiles, birds, and mammals; the amnion is the innermost membrane.

Both amniocentesis and another procedure called chorionic villus sampling, in which doctors pluck bits of the placenta, isolate fetal cells that can reveal many genetic problems in an unborn baby with near certainty.
Chorionic villus sampling, to detect genetic abnormalities in the embryo or fetus in the first trimester.
A reduction in circulating levels of estrogens and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and/or elevated levels of progesterone, androgens, human chorionic gonadotrophin, IGF-1 binding proteins 1 and 3, cortisol, and insulin have been associated with reduced risk.
