choropleth map

Map on which the average numerical value of some aspect of an area (for example, unemployment by county) is indicated by a scale of colours or isoline shadings. An increase in average value is normally shown by a darker or more intense colour or shading. Choropleth maps are visually impressive but may mislead by suggesting sudden changes between areas.
