chromiteIron chromium oxide, the main chromium ore. It is one of the spinel group of minerals, and crystallizes in dark-coloured octahedra of the cubic system. Chromite is usually found in association with ultrabasic and basic rocks; in Cyprus, for example, it occurs with serpentine, and in South Africa it forms continuous layers in a layered intrusion. | For many years, the metalcasting industry has been using chromite as a specialty sand to produce high quality castings poured with various high temperature steel alloys. Chemical analyses of chromite mineral grains from nine of the meteorites, found at various levels in the quarry, mark the stones as pieces of a single extraterrestrial body, says Wieler. For example, layered intrusions are subdivided into stratiform and contact deposits, with the stratiform deposits further subdivided into chromite and sulphide-associated deposits. |
