| Clinical and demographic findings can help make distinctions, as can pertinent immunohistochemical reactions to synaptophysin, chromogranin, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament protein (NFP), S-100 protein, keratin, CD45RB, desmin, CD99, and HMB45. Immunohistochemical staining for $100 was performed to characterize malignant schwannoma, whereas chromogranin A staining was used to characterize olfactory neuroblastomas. In such a setting, immunohistochemistry analysis will help with the separation between primary and metastatic tumors: primary thyroid follicular tumors will usually be immunoreactive with thyroglobutin, CK7, and TTF-1, while C-cell--derived tumors will be reactive to calcitonin and chromogranin. |
