chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

In medicine, one of several related, usually irreversible, diseases of the lung, including emphysema and chronic obstructive bronchitis. The main symptoms are coughing, wheezing, and breathing difficulties and the primary cause is smoking.

There were 122,000 deaths from COPDs in the USA in 2003.

The study focused on the cost of medical care given to individuals who have asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic airway obstruction, and other major respiratory diseases, compared with costs for people who do not have serious lung problems.
On a percentage basis, the diseases most likely to result in long-term disability were chronic airway obstruction (for example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), acute ill-defined cerebrovascular disease (such as stroke), rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and osteoarthrosis.
