charFish Salvelinus alpinus related to the trout, living in the Arctic coastal waters, and also in Europe and North America in some upland lakes. It is one of Britain's rarest fish, and is at risk from growing acidification. Numerous variants have been described, but they probably all belong to the same species. An editor friend who grew up in New York as the son of a cleaning woman glimpsed a larger world when he went to work with her and saw how her clients lived. His father had died when he was 7, and Ruiz helped support the family, picking fruit in orchards while his mother worked as a cleaning woman. |
