Congenital facial deformity, a cleft in the upper lip and jaw, which may extend back into the palate (cleft palate). It can be remedied by surgery.

During the May trip to Tena, a city of about 20,000 in the Amazon rain forest, surgeons corrected cleft lip and palate deformities for children in outlying villages.
I didn't know that I would give birth to a baby with a birth defect, a cleft lip and palate.
This associates the cervical cleft with other midline clefts such as cleft lip and cleft palate, which are caused by a failure of fusion of the first branchial arch.
