Fissure of the roof of the mouth, often accompanied by a harelip, the result of the two halves of the palate failing to join properly during embryonic development. It can be remedied by plastic surgery. Approximately 1 child in 2,000 is born with a cleft palate.

The chances of having a baby with a cleft palate are increased by smoking, taking Valium, or undergoing high stress levels.
