They are the larval stage of the click beetle, so-called because of the noise it makes when it throws its body into the air to right itself.
In addition to fireflies, glowworms (larvae of Phengodes beetles) and a class of click beetles also sport internal lightbulbs.
To soar into the air, this click beetle bends backward and inserts a spike on the back of its head into a socket on its back.
