closed question

Question that limits the answer to a particular set of responses. ‘Do you like coffee?’ is an example of a closed question eliciting a yes or no answer. This contrasts with an open question such as, ‘What kind of drink do you like?’, which allows for a much bigger range of responses. In market research closed questions can be used for quantitative research while open questions are used for qualitative research. Closed questions are often used in questionnaires requiring those filling them out to tick boxes.
