cockatoo

Any of several crested parrots, especially of the genus Cacatua, family Psittacidae, of the order Psittaciformes. They usually have light-coloured plumage with tinges of red, yellow, or orange on the face, and an erectile crest on the head. They are native to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands.

There are about 17 species, one of the most familiar being the sulphur-crested cockatoo C. galerita of Australia and New Guinea, about 50 cm/20 in long, white with a yellow crest and dark beak.
