In psychology, a general term covering the functions involved in synthesizing information - for example, perception (seeing, hearing, and so on), attention, memory, and reasoning.

Besides promoting self-regulated learning, the aforementioned project emphasized process-oriented writing advocated within Flower and Hayes' (1981) Cognitive Process Theory of Writing.
