cognitive therapy

Treatment for emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety states. It encourages the patient to challenge the distorted and unhelpful thinking that is characteristic of depression, for example. The treatment may include behaviour therapy.

Cognitive therapy was developed by the psychiatrist Aaron T Beck and others in the USA. Not greatly concerned with the unconscious and its manifestations, cognitive therapy focuses on the patient's conscious mental processes in the belief that problems may be due to faulty learning, wrong information, mistaken influences, and so on.
