colour depth

In computing, the maximum number of colours that can be displayed simultaneously in an image by a particular computer system.

The most common modes are 16, 256, 32K, 64K, and 16.7 million (true colour). The greater the colour depth, the larger the size of the picture file but the more detailed and realistic the quality of the picture.
