columbineAny of a group of plants belonging to the buttercup family. All are perennial herbs with divided leaves and hanging flower heads with spurred petals. (Genus Aquilegia, family Ranunculaceae.) The wild columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris), with blue flowers, has been developed by repeated crossing to produce modern garden species (A. x hybrida), with larger flowers and a wider range of colours. The eastern columbine (A. canadensis), with red flowers, is native to eastern North America. Columbine

| There's some big clumps o' columbine in th' garden. Columbine and Ladysmock, Marjoram and Wild Basil, the Cowslip and the Flower-de-luce, the Daffodil and the Clove-Pink bloomed or blossomed in their proper order as the months went by, one flower taking another flower's place, so that there were always beautiful things to look at, and pleasant odours to smell. As to Harlequin and Columbine, I discovered immediately that they lodged (they are always looking after lodgings in a pantomime) at a very small clockmaker's one story high, near the hotel; which, in addition to various symbols and devices, almost covering the whole front, had a great dial hanging out - to be jumped through, of course. |
