combined heat and power generation

(CHP generation) simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat in a power station. The heat is often in the form of hot water or steam, which can be used for local district heating or in industry. The electricity output from a CHP plant is lower than from a conventional station, but the overall efficiency of energy conversion is higher. A typical CHP plant may convert 80% of the original fuel energy into a mix of electricity and useful heat, whereas a conventional power station rarely achieves even a 40% conversion rate.
