comfort zone

Area in which an individual feels happy they can perform competently without extending themselves. For an individual to perform to their maximum ability they may need to be challenged. This inevitably involves the individual operating outside their comfort zone, undertaking tasks which they do not feel absolutely certain they can perform successfully.
