knapweed

Any of several weedy plants belonging to the daisy family. In the common knapweed (C. nigra), also known as a hardhead, the hard, dark buds break open at the top into pale purple composite flowers. It is native to Europe and has been introduced to North America. (Genus Centaurea, family Compositae.)
