commuter

Person who travels into a large town or city for work. For example, each working day more than 1.2 million people commute into London. A commuter belt is the area around a town in which commuters live (see also dormitory town). Commuter settlements are generally more affluent than others, reflecting the wages of their residents, who prefer to live in a more attractive rural environment and can afford the daily costs of travelling to work.

Improved train services and better roads, especially motorways, have increased the number of commuters by making the countryside and towns more accessible.
