pet

Animal kept for companionship and occasionally for status. Research suggests that interaction with a pet induces relaxation (slower heart rate and lower blood pressure). In 16th–17th century Europe, keeping animals in this way was thought suggestive of witchcraft.

AnAustralian study in 1992 found that pet owners had lower cholesterol levels than non-pet owners with comparable lifestyles.
