component

In mathematics, one of the vectors produced when a single vector is resolved into two or more parts. The vector sum of the components gives the original vector.

component

In physics, one of two or more vectors, normally at right angles to each other, that add together to produce the same effect as a single resultant vector. Any vector quantity, such as force, velocity, or electric field, can be resolved into components chosen for ease of calculation. For example, the weight of a body resting on a slope can be resolved into two force components (see resolution of forces); one normal to the slope and the other parallel to the slope.
