The Mozart concerto was the evening's big disappointment, mostly because the soloist, Philharmonic concertmaster Martin Chalifour, seemed nervous. Roy Malan is himself a famed concertmaster and solo violinist who studied under Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute, so is the perfect critic to provide biographical embellishment to the life of violinist Efrem Zimbalist, one of the directors of the Curtis Institute of Music. While the sublime music plays (in its entirety, twice), we hear the conductor's mundane internal monologue--a jumble of narcissistic preening, erotic yearning, and scathing commentary about the concertmaster, the soprano, his wife, and a young man cruising him from the balcony (we hear their thoughts spoken aloud too). |
