That tiny island at the southernmost tip of the United States is known as the Conch Republic, and only those residents born on the island can call themselves conchs. From one light-filled studio comes the sound of music--snippets of classical compositions, pre-Columbian tunes performed with drums, flutes, and conchs, and swelling mariachi-style songs. Tourists poured in as the local Conchs opened up their homes to visitors. |
