An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 2004. But if it gets into the eye the bacterium can cause conjunctivitis (pink, infected eye), says lead researcher Elizabeth Brooks. The differential diagnosis includes vocal fold polyps and ligneous conjunctivitis, and it is important to note that amyloid may occur in association with multiple myeloma, small cell carcinoma, and medullary thyroid carcinoma. |
