connective

General term for a word or phrase that links sentences, clauses, or phrases.

There are two main types: conjunctions and adverbs that link one clause to another. Examples of conjunctions are and, or, but, as in ‘I speak German but I don't speak Spanish’. Adverbs linking clauses are also known as conjuncts; examples are however, to summarize, meanwhile, in addition, as in ‘The government faced problems from the trade unions. In addition, the party organization itself was in disarray.’
