connetable de France

Under the early kings of France, a dignitary at court; in the reign of Philip II (1180–1223) it became the title of the commander-in-chief of the army.

Cardinal Richelieu removed the office in 1627 but Napoleon revived it in 1804, giving it to his brother Louis Bonaparte. It was finally abolished when the Bourbon monarchy was restored in 1814.
