conquistador

Any of the early Spanish conquerors in the Americas. The title is applied in particular to those leaders who overthrew the indigenous empires of Peru and Mexico, and other parts of Central and South America. They include Hernán Cortés, who subjugated Mexico; Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru with Diego de Almagro; and Juan Ponce de León.
