conservatory

A school or college of music which specializes in preparing students for a career in performance or composition. The term originated in 16th-and 17th-century Italy with orphanages that taught music to a high standard. Famous conservatories include the Juilliard School in New York, the Conservatoire in Paris, and the Royal College of Music in London.
