In England, an officer formerly appointed to keep the peace in manors, villages, and tithings when the increase of population made the duty too onerous for high constables alone.

Parish constables were practically abolished by the county Police Acts of 1839 and 1840, which established the county constabulary, and provided that parish constables should only be appointed by the magistrates of general quarter sessions when it was considered necessary.
