consumer sovereignty

Situation where consumers decide what is to be produced by producers. In a market economy, this is achieved through companies being forced to compete to attract the spending of consumers. In a market economy, this could be the result of monopoly power, or the use of advertising which manipulates the desires of consumers for products.
