continental fingering
| In music, the fingering of piano music now in universal use, with the fingers marked 1–5 from the thumb. This system has displaced the so-called English fingering, marked + for the thumb and 1–4 for the other fingers, which however, was by no means in use throughout the whole history of English keyboard music. |
