continental shelfSubmerged edge of a continent, a gently sloping plain that extends into the ocean. It typically has a gradient of less than 1°. The Outer Continental Shelf has enough natural gas to heat 100 million homes for 60 years, and enough oil to drive 85 million cars for 35 years. The islet was discovered in 1993 by German scientists conducting research on Greenland's continental shelf. The three countries will work quickly to delineate Cyprus's continental shelf, in order to prevent nearby Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, or even Britain from taking advantage of any further discoveries. |
